Grape Sex

20120518-101810.jpgWell, it’s come to that point in the year. The mood is finally right, and over the next few weeks, there’ll be a lot of sex in the vineyards. Strictly between the grapes of course.

Grapevines are hermaphroditic. (Remember 8th grade biology?) That means the plants have both male and female reproductive parts. Each spring—right about now—the vines will pollinate themselves. But only if conditions are perfect. Grapes as it turns out are extremely fussy about “the right moment.” Too much wind? Forget it. A little chill in the air? The grapes get a headache. Rain? May as well take a cold shower. Only when it’s still, calm, and perfectly warm, will grapes mate. The tender process is called “flowering,” and indeed, if all goes well, tiny white flowers will result. With time, these tiny white flowers will become clusters of grapes. Needless to say, if things go awry and no flowers appear, there will be no grapes. Sorry buddy.

…And do crafts.

After a long week of drinking wine leaves you with a plethora of empty bottles and discarded corks, you can turn to me for inspiration!

Here are a few ideas of what you can do to give another life to our favorite handlebars:

Cut to bottoms away and place a tea light candle underneath to create a romantic mood… in which to drink more wine and contemplate another craft.

Make a monogram with corks! Use cardboard as a support to attach the corks with hot glue. Let the glue cool. Take a sip of wine & lean back to admire your handy work.

Now that you’ve used all of your corks, you might feel as if you’ve neglected the bottles. Make a beautiful centerpiece with your label-less bottles. Cluster the scrubbed bottles in the center of the table and jam some candlesticks inside.

They look great with or without additional decoration. If you’re craving more ‘umph’, try tying a satin ribbon around the neck of the bottles to compliment your placemats.

When you’re finished, invite your company over and hope they don’t judge you for drinking so much.

The movie starts out following a blissfully unaware teen, Charlie (Anton Yelchin). After a few twilight jabs and a brief conversation with his seemingly eccentric friend, Edward Lee (McLovin), Charlie becomes convinced that his neighbor is a vampire.

Without revealing spoilers, proof becomes available to Charlie that his neighbor is, in fact, a blood sucker. Vamps in this story have no reflection and very un-manicured nails, must be invited in and squeal like a baby when stabbed with a Century 21 picket, explode in the sun light and move inhumanly fast, and eat apples while watching The Real Housewives.

It is a mixture of horror and comedic satire. A long movie at nearly two hours, it wasn’t my favorite. The type of vamp was a bit gruesome for my taste but it was an interesting take on the popular genre.

I’ll give it V\ out of VVV.

Kristen Stewart in ELLE:

  • On a ring she wears that’s supposedly from Robert: “Everyone wants to know. Everyone knows already — it’s ridiculous.”
  • On playing intense characters: “It’s one of the reasons I want to act. I love living in different worlds, because a lot of times mine is pretty nice and easy.”

Sugarmint Dessert Cups

What you’ll need:

1 package of sugar cookie mix (I used Betty Crocker)

1/3 cup vegetable/canola oil

water

3-6 drops of green food coloring

1 teaspoon peppermint extract

6 regular sized Hershey’s milk chocolate bars

Muffin Pan, either mini or full-sized

Paper muffin cups to fit your pan

It’s so easy…

1. Prepare the cookie dough by the package’s directions, omitting the eggs (unless you don’t quiver in fear over Salmonella… then go for it!).

2. You may need to add some extra water to get the consistancy that you want, since we probably left out the eggs. You want the dough moist, not crumbling and not soupy. Add 3-6 drops of green food coloring (color to your preference) and 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract.

3. Place paper pan liners in the pan.

4. Roll dough into small enough round balls to fit into your muffin tin. You want to leave room at the top and sides because we’re about to fill the cup with chocolate…

5. Take 1/2 of your stash of chocolate bars and melt them slowly. I tossed it in the microwave at :30 intervals and it worked just fine. The chocolate cools and hardens relatively quickly, so I recommend doing only 2-3 bars at a time.

6. Once melted, pour chocolate into the muffin cups until your ball of dough is covered. Then fill the next cup, and so on and so forth.

7. Once all of your balls are covered with chocolate, let them cool in the refrigerator (or the freezer if you can’t fathom waiting…). I don’t know how long it takes to cool in the fridge, I’ve never had the patience… But it only takes about 10 minutes in the freezer.

8. Once cooled, slowly pull off the paper…

9. And pull on your favorite yoga pants and start chipping away at your DVR and ENJOY!!
